I’ve always really enjoyed art and I’ve also really enjoyed science and it’s kind of tricky trying to find a profession that kind of incorporates both of those aspects but as I continued and went through I ended up hearing about examples of people that were dentists or some of my friends dads that were dentists and things like that and I started learning a bit more about dentistry and about health care and I like the aspect that you have the ability to help people and serve people and incorporate some of the talents and abilities that I already have so I just thought that was a good match and move forward with it and it’s been quite a passion of mine as I developed my ability to help other people and perform dentistry. I found out fairly quickly that I have a really good memory and I excelled in school in fact I ended up graduating as a valedictorian of my high school. I ended up going to Idaho State University for my undergraduate studies and after I got a bachelor of science degree there I went to Virginia Commonwealth University, the medical campus of Virginia there and studied dentistry.
After I completed dental school I went back to Idaho and I completed a one-year residency program in advanced general dentistry so that allowed me to focus on specifics in dentistry that a lot of other dentists are not comfortable with and then following that I just continue to keep up on continuing education so that I can continue to hone my skills and provide the best patient care possible. To me the most rewarding aspect of dentistry is seeing people’s lives change whether it’s somebody who was not comfortable smiling and it actually affected their overall mood and persona and now they’re smiling all the time and they are happier and just have a better time with life in general. To the other side of the spectrum where people are in pain and they can’t eat and they avoid the foods that they love just trying to eat soft things that aren’t going to set off their tooth pain and now they have the ability to eat the foods that they love again.
In fact I just had a patient in about a week ago that was telling me about how once they got their implant supported dentures in place they were able to eat steak which they hadn’t done for years and years and to see the smile on their face about something that a lot of times we take for granted and it’s really rewarding to have moments like that.
